Business Intelligence Comparison and Opinion

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

For the past few months our company has been searching for a business intelligence vendor that specializes in data visualization software to help out our human resources department track performance management better. I was personally assigned the task of evaluating a variety of vendors to find out which one fit our needs best. During my research process I found a few different BI vendors such as Pentaho, Jaspersoft and Cognos but one company in particular stood out in terms of valuable information about the benefits of their product line, that company was Actuate. When I landed on their website, I immediately saw a link for data visualization. The web page contained free demos about BIRT Google maps and also a Flash map showcase. As I further investigated the website, I found a great section about their performance management product called PerformanceSoft. I was quite interested with their offering and decided to try out the free trial download of the software. I am currently evaluating the software and find it to be very user friendly and intuitive. The dashboard interface is very clean and the graphical representations are quite remarkable. Overall, we have not yet decided on which companies’ business intelligence software we will use but Actuate BIRT is definitely in consideration at the moment
